Why Is My AC Blowing Warm Air? 5 Common Causes
There is nothing worse than surviving a 105°F Texas summer day only to realize the air blowing out of your vents is lukewarm. Before panicking and assuming you need a $10,000 replacement, it’s important to understand that many AC problems are easily repairable.
At SunDollar A/C & Heat, we are a repair-first company. We see these five issues every single week in North Texas and East Texas and Fort Worth:
1. Incorrect Thermostat Settings
It sounds incredibly obvious, but you’d be surprised how often a thermostat gets bumped. Make sure the thermostat is set to "COOL" and the fan is set to "AUTO". If the fan is set to "ON", it will blow warm air when the outdoor condenser unit cycles off.
2. A Clogged Air Filter
Your AC unit needs to breathe. If your return air filter is choked with dust, pet hair, and debris from the Texas spring, it restricts airflow over the indoor evaporator coil. This can actually cause the coil to freeze solid into a block of ice, resulting in warm air blowing from the vents. Check and replace your 1-inch filters every 30 days!
3. A Failed Capacitor
The capacitor is essentially a massive battery stored in your outdoor condensing unit. It sends a massive jolt of electricity to kickstart the compressor and the fan motor. Extreme Texas heat often causes these capacitors to bulge and fail. If you hear a humming or buzzing noise from the unit outside but the fan isn't spinning, it's likely a bad capacitor. We carry universal capacitors on all our trucks and can fix this in under an hour.
4. Low Refrigerant (Freon / R410A)
Air conditioners do not "consume" refrigerant the way a car consumes gas. It exists in a closed, pressurized loop. If you are low on refrigerant, you have a leak. When the system lacks refrigerant, it cannot absorb the heat from inside your home, causing it to blow warm air. Recharging the system is a temporary fix; a proper repair requires finding and patching the leak.
5. A Dirty Condenser Coil
The big unit sitting in your backyard is responsible for rejecting the heat absorbed from your home. If the metal fins are caked in mud, lawn trimmings, and dirt, the heat cannot escape into the outside air. Have your system professionally washed with chemical coil cleaner during an annual preventative maintenance check.
